All the living organisms are made up of cells. There are some organisms of which the body is made up of only one cell. They are called unicellular organisms. Organisms with more than one cell are multi cellular organisms.
In 1839 Theodor Schwann
independently asserted that all animals and plants are made of cell. This joint
findings form the basis of cell theory.
A significant addition was made by Rudolt Virchow
in1885. He summarized the cell theory in the Latin phrase “OMNIS CELLULAE
CELLULA” which means cells arise from pre-existing cells.
Cell theory
It states,
- All living organisms are made of cells.
- New cells are formed from old cells as a result of cell division.
- All cells are similar in structure and function (the way they work) but not identical.
- The structure of an organism depends on the way in which the cells are organized.
- The functions of organisms depend on the functions of their cells.
- The cell is the fundamental unit of structure and function in living things.
- All cells come from pre existing cells by division.
- Energy flow (metabolism and biochemistry) occurs within cells.
- Cells contain hereditary information (DNA) which is passed from cell to cell during cell division.
- All cells are basically the same in chemical composition.
- All known living things are made up of cells.
- Some organisms are unicellular, i.e., made up of only one cell.
- Others are multi cellular, composed of a number of cells.
- The activity of an organism depends on the total activity of independent cells.
